Dusky electro-acoustic minimalists Hessien christen the roster in their first album release since 2010’s ‘Home Is Where The Ghost Is’. The diverse collection of tracks find the duo of Tim Martin (Maps and Diagrams, Black Elk, Atlantis) and Charles Sage (y0t0, The Rothko Chapel) pushing their trademark sound even further out, incorporating wall-of-sound dalliances in electronic textures, repeated motifs and cavernous off-kilter rhythms. Completists will be also happy to note that some rare compilation and unreleased tracks have been included in a single cohesive dialogue for the first time. Mastered with cerebral force by Mark Kuykendall, the album showcases every facet of Hessien’s distinctive sound with heft and depth.
“Your Empire, In Decline” is open, bountiful music that sways like a palm tree as it catches a light breeze. It lives in a time of easy peace, but the deeper textures and the grainy distortion tell an altogether different tale. The static comes and goes, and it warns of an uneasy period — something it’s endured once before, or something lurking around the corner in the future — a brutal conflict that was, once upon a time, locked up in the cage of history."
